Developmental milestones are tasks most children can perform at certain ages. For example:
- Ability to lift and turn the head
- Crawling begins
- Walking begins
- Speech begins
- Learning to prepare food
- Goal-setting
- First crushes and dating (in most but not all youths)
Some developmental milestones are culture- and locale-dependent. For example, learning to ride a bike and learning to navigate public transportation independently may be common in some areas, but not others.
This is distinct from physical development because it refers to skills, not appearance. Note: the Tanner stages can be used to approximately judge a child's age based on physical development.
