in psychotherapy enactments are regressive interactions between a client and their therapist that reenacts symbolically the past experience or emotional conflict of one or both parties. This may have a defensive function in the therapy. In psychoanalytic based therapies such communication may be regarded as an inevitable part of the psychotherapeutic processes arising out of the psychotherapeutic transference and countertransference forces at work.

It can also be a general phenomena in ordinary relationships.
