Foot fetishism, also known as podophilia, is a pronounced sexual attraction to feet. This can include bare feet, but also footwear, such as flip flops and sandals.

Each foot fetishist has their own preference. This includes the shape and size of the feet and toes, the shoes, socks and other footwear. The interaction is also a part of foot fetishism, such as kissing, licking, washing, rubbing or tickling. Licking and tickling are the most popular among foot fetishes, especially by the homosexual men. Foot fetishism can also differ from culture. In China, people had fetish for women with small feet, so they made the women wear small shoes, so their feet wouldn't grow. However, they had fetishes for women in shoes and not barefoot. Nowadays in China, foot fetishism is mainly focused on men's big (bare) feet. While in the western, foot fetishism was always focused on men's bare feet, and big feet. Foot fetishism is the most common by homosexual men, which means men that have fetishes for men's feet are the most common.

Related fetishes

Related fetishes are sock fetishism, shoe fetishism and leg fetishism, all are the most common by homosexual men. Suit and tie fetishism are also related, some foot fetishes have fetishes for men in suit and tie and barefoot. However, a fetish for barefoot men in suit and tie is more common by heterosexual women than homosexual men. Tickle fetishism is the fetish for tickling. This can be playful, but also torturous. The victim is tied and other tickle tools are used. Baby oil is used to make the victim more ticklish. Tickle fetishism is, just like foot fetishism, the most common among homosexual men. Of course, the feet are one of the most popular among ticklish spots.

Cause of foot fetishism

Similar to other forms of sexual fetishism, no consensus has yet been established about the specific causes of foot fetishism. Foot fetishism can arise very early in childhood, as part of the first budding sexuality. The American neurologist Vilayanur Ramachandran found a possible explanation for the fetish in the position of the feet and genitalia on the somatosensory homunculus.
