We are moving to the stage where people are substantially rewriting the articles imported from Wikipedia and it is appropriate to remove the enWP template when the judgement is that our efforts contribute more than half the credit. However I think it is important that the people who put the initial effort in should be credited, as part of the GDFL license, so I suggest that the template is placed on the discussion page. The precedent for this is when copying templates the WP template is placed on the discussion page.

Most of us want to retain a credit for our work, but our own articles will of course be substantially revised. So it is important to continue to honour previous contributors upon whose shoulders we stand.Dr Joe Kiff - User:Lifeartist (talk) 23:43, 20 August 2006 (UTC)

A Wikipedia author might take a very dim view of the statement that "it is appropriate to remove the enWP template when the judgement is that our efforts contribute more than half the credit". His or her prizewinning sentence might be still there, deserving the attribution the license requires. Our template doesn't suggest that the bulk of the page came from WP; it just says "This page uses content from ...". I'd recommend against any removal until the remover is certain that not a single sentence of the original remains recognisable. As for putting it on the Talk page - that's a second-best solution; "when copying templates the WP template is placed on the discussion page" no longer applies to any that I copy, because I've found how to put them on the template page: put them in a "<noinclude></noinclude>" section.
