Forward masking or post masking is a form of masking which occurs when a sudden stimulus makes other sounds inaudible as they obscure a sound immediately following the masker. In the laboratory it occurs when the perception of a 'test stimulus' is prejudiced by the presentation of a different, 'masking stimulus'
