Inhibition as a personality process is characterised by increased levels of introversion and social inhibition and the widespread attempted suppression of thoughts, feelings and behavior.

In psychoanalysis such a personality process reflects the superego's overcontrolling of Id impulses. In classical theory inhibition is used in the sense of prevention as in the prevention of expression.
