Magnitude estimation is a scaling method used in statistics and psychophysics for evaluating quantative judgement and ratio scaling. In the method each stimulus is given a number that reflects its proportionate intensity against an agreed standard. So, for example, if a reference brightness is given a value of 50 a light that is subjectively perceived as twice as bright should be rated at 100.
