Moderate intellectual disability is a category of intellectual disability defined within the IQ range of 35-49. They have significant difficulties that may affect their ability to communicate.[1]
Diagnosis should include adaptive functioning skills as well as IQ. A loved one can fill out an adaptive behavior rating scale. Diagnosis will involve IQ, adaptive behavior, and the examiner's observations of the person.
Abilities and needs[]
An adult with a moderate intellectual disability will have abilities similar to those of a typically-developing person between 6 and 9 years old.[2] While they'll experience significant academic limitations, they can learn basic reading, writing, and counting.[1] They may be more advanced in some skill areas than others.
Communication skills may be simple and basic, even in adulthood. It may take them extra time to process what is said and piece together their own thoughts.
People with a moderate intellectual disability will develop more slowly, but they will gain many skills over time. They can learn self-care, health, and safety skills.[3] They are likely to benefit from special education.
Independent living is unlikely and they live in supportive living situation like a group home.[1] However, they may be able to work part-time, volunteer, and/or enjoy various social activities. They also can usually travel alone to nearby familiar places.[3]
