In 1995 Freud introduced the concept of anxiety neurosis which included both acute and chronic symptoms of anxiety and their attendant somatic symptoms. His descriptions of the acute condition were similar to DSM-IV panic disorder and he was the first to suggest the link between panic attacks and agoraphobia.

The diagnosis of anxiety neurosis was dropped in DSM-III when it was produced in 1980 and panic disorder has remained the preferred term.
