Social psychology: Altruism · Attribution · Attitudes · Conformity · Discrimination · Groups · Interpersonal relations · Obedience · Prejudice · Norms · Perception · Index · Outline
Rites are socially proscribed forms for the conduct of ceremonies.
These may be divided into:
- Nonreligious rites eg tatooing to become a member of a gang
- Religious practices eg prayers
In both cases the rites may contain ritual elements: that is, stylized and/or symbolic sequences of actions which are laid down very precisely and where variation is not allowed.
