Sociopathic personality (or sociopath and sociopathy) was historically a transitional term, between the ideas of psychopathic personality (or psychopath) and what is now the preferred term "antisocial personality disorder". At the time it was thought important to emphasize the social aspect of the disorder, the disturbed and maladjusted nature of social relationships and the incidence of antisocial behavior.
